Born in Nigeria, West Africa in 1973 to parents Veronica (English) and Bola (Nigerian), my early childhood was rich with African culture and the enjoyments that came from a successful family business thriving on the 1970's and 1980's Nigerian economy. With my Sister Sonia the foundation of our lives focused primarily on education and Christianity and the importance of both would serve as my guide.
In 1984, due to the political unrest in Nigeria our family moved to the little country town of Burnley in Lancashire, England where my Grandparents Douglas and Lilly Le Cheminant still live. I attended Walshaw High School for young ladies - the same school my Mother had attended. Being the only black kid in school did not stop me from forging friendships that would last a lifetime. My creative interests had begun to show as demonstrated by an artistic award from Cadbury's and subsequent national tour of a medieval sculpture of art I created. I completed my secondary school education with 10 GCSE's.
In 1989 I was accepted into Manchester College of Arts and Technology where I studied and passed 4 A Levels in Government and Politics, English Literature, Archaeology and Sociology. In 1991 I was accepted into Thames Valley University in Ealing, London where I studied and completed an LLB (BA) in Law.
While at university I had a part time job working for a new company called VodaFone. On a two week holiday to New York, my limited cellular experience resulted in the largest wholesaler for CellularOne (now AT&T Wireless Services) offering me a job and an opportunity to work in America. With their sponsorship and guidance I made the exciting transatlantic move and started my career.
Once I reached the stage where the next rung on the ladder was the owner of the company, I moved to Westcon - a Distributor for Nortel Networks and Cisco Systems. Within 12 months I had been promoted three times from Jr. Marketing Specialist to Marketing Specialist to Sr. Marketing Specialist. I was responsible for the entire Nortel Networks Marketing - the companies largest Vendor and a marketing budget of $2 million dollars a quarter. Visit my portfolio for a closer look at these marketing endeavors.
As a result of a corporate merge, in 1999 Westcon had a huge reorganization that resulted in many of the senior management team that I had been loyal to, leaving the company. Three members of this group started a new company and encouraged me to join them on this new venture. A difficult decision at the time as I had just been offered a lucrative position with Cisco Systems.
In the end I choose adventure and opportunity over security and fortune. A decision that would prove beneficial until the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks in New York that resulted in a trickle down effect of a substantial loss of business for the company.
My career has encompassed many promotions, various sales support positions and the benefit of working with large and small organizations and producing marketing materials for varied audiences. I have been involved in every stage of the sales cycle and have conducted marketing based on extremely limited budgets as well as limitless budgets. I have approached industries with little or no experience of them and through diligent research and study gained a detailed understanding to enable me to produce a creative and solid marketing campaign, that isn't merely cosmetic - but really works. Objectives are achieved. Sales are made. Goals are met.
